Drucilla Winters, a character fans will never forget on Y&R. Read more here--->>
Drucilla Barber Winters "Dru". She was black girl magic long before the phrase was coined. Dru was the OG "Brash and Sassy" of Genoa City. There have been very few characters, before or since, that electrified Genoa City like that.
Dru had one of the best soap character transformations ever. She went from a loud, abrasive, take no crap, "illiterate criminal" to a loud (we love her loud), take no crap (we love her that way too), charismatic, stylish, model, entrepreneur leading lady. Whether Dru was doing ballet, modeling or just standing there breathing she was riveting to watch. She commanded your attention when she was on screen.
She "picked" her way onto the canvas in 1990 picket pocketing Nathan Hastings. Nathan who saw himself in Dru had mercy on her and let her go. Dru called her aunt, the beloved Aunt Mamie. Aunt Mamie talked her boss, John Abbott, into letting Dru stay with her on the Abbott property. And John hired Dru to work in the mailroom at Jabot.
But Dru continued her side hustle. Nathan busted her again this time for shoplifting while Nathan was working security for Fenmore's Department Store. Nathan, soap gawds bless his soul, convinced the Judge to release Dru to his custody instead of sending her to jail.
Dru fell in love with her "guardian angel. But his heart belonged to Dru's arch-rival, who was also the apple of their parents' eye, Dru's "perfect" sister, Olivia Barber "Liv". Of course, that didn't deter Dru. In fact, most likely it was more fuel to her fire. Dru tried to seduce and impress Nathan but he loved Liv.
When Dru made up a man for herself, she was pushed into producing him. She convinced, up and coming business executive, Neil Winters, to pose as her faux boyfriend. He agreed and fell in love with Liv along the way. Neil was blue over Liv and Dru blue over Nathan. What do two blue broken hearts do? They fall in love! And we got Neil and Dru! Yea!!
Neil and Dru had and overcame all sorts of obstacles. But their lives and the Winters family would never be the same once Neil's, brother Malcolm Winters came to town. Neil and Malcolm's sibling relationship mirrored Dru and Olivia's when they first came on canvas. The character dynamics were also similar. Neil like Olivia was the "golden child". And Malcolm like Dru was, at least in their minds, the "other child".
Malcolm came to make amends with his brother Neil but ended up falling for, Dru and slept with her. Now, yes, Dru always maintained she was over medicated when she slept with Malcolm and she thought he was Neil. Not sure if I could ever really buy that. Look at Malcolm! But that was the story our Dru "peddled" so let's proceed. Needless to say, Malcolm and Dru kept their little "medicated" tryst on the down low.
We got a Who the Baby Daddy storyline but that would be years in the making. In the interim, Dru gave birth to Lily Winters. After Lily was born Neil, went all caveman on Dru. He started pounding his chest and spouting nonsense that Dru needed to be at home with Lily unless she had a "real job". And in his mind modeling didn't qualify. Dru started taking the pill so she wouldn't get pregnant again. Neil found out. They broke up and got back together. But that issue was one they just couldn't seem to overcome and Dru and Lily left for Paris.
They returned some years later when Dru came to donate bone marrow to save Liv's life. Neil just knew he was getting his Dru back. Not so fast. Olivia (who had been widowed by Nathan) and Malcolm, who had gotten together, had split up. Malcolm finally had his chance at Dru. Malcolm and Dru wasn't necessarily a great love affair. But they did care for each other. Dru left for Paris, Malcolm followed but came back and said he and Dru just didn't work out.
In 2002 Dru and Lily returned again, this time because Lily had become quite a handful. But little did Dru know that Neil needed saving this time. He had hit the bottom of rock bottom. He was unemployed, an alcoholic and was living on the wrong side of town. But you know Dru and her love was strong enough to bring Neil back from the brink. It took some time but the Winters family would be back together again.
Neil and Dru's reconciliation bliss was marred by all the drama of their wayward teenage daughter. Lily was a mess back in the day. If you don't know her history, read it. A couple of highlights; she met (online), fell for, snuck behind her parents back with 10 years her senior, Kevin Fisher (also her first) and contracted a STD along the way. And then met, fell in love with, went on the run with when he was a fugitive and later eloped with Daniel Romalotti, "Daniel". A mess I say.
Lily met Devon Hamilton, a troubled teen who had been shuffled from one foster home to another. His father was deceased and his mother was a crackhead. Dru saw herself in the young Devon and wanted to do for him what Nathan did for her. Dru and Neil became the temporary foster parents of Devon. It took Devon time to learn to trust and believe in a family's love and it took time for Neil to want to care for Devon long term. But they did become a real loving family and it was beautiful.
As I said before, it took time (years) for Lily's paternity to be known for sure and revealed. Malcolm was thought to be dead for a few years but returned. He came back with an ax to grind against Neil, who he thought had left him for dead in Kenya, and to see his son Nate. It was during that time that a paternity test was done. Malcolm was Lily's biological father. Malcolm and Dru would keep it a secret from Lily and Neil. Yes, yes, yes nothing ever stays a secret but I just write it like they wrote it lol.
The truth was revealed when Lily overheard Dru and Phyllis arguing about her paternity. Lily was so distraught that when she went to email Daniel about it, she mistakenly sent it to "dad" instead of "Daniel. The Winters family imploded. Dru and Neil split, Neil and Malcolm were back at each other's throats, it was a soapy mess (the good kind).
Neil started dating his co-worker, Carmen Mesta. Let's just say Dru wasn't exactly team "Narmen". Dru went a little cray-cray. She harassed them, followed them and at one point cut up Carmen's clothes and even landed herself in jail (she got probation).
In the midst of the craziness, Devon went deaf which drew Neil and Dru back together. Carmen was then murdered. Devon and Dru were suspects and eventually were exonerated. Before they were exonerated, during all the madness, there was joy when Devon underwent cochlear implant surgery and was able to hear again and he was adopted and officially became a Winters.
Life went on until April 2007. Dru, always a good friend to Sharon, intervened in a fight with Phyllis and Sharon over Phyllis blackmailing Sharon about her affair with Brad Carlton. The ladies were on a photo shoot and standing on the edge of a cliff. While fighting over a cell phone, Dru lost her footing and fell into the river below. Dru was and continues to be presumed dead.
Dru died and Neil, Devon, Lily and Genoa City (and I) have never been the same.
We wait for Dru to rise from the waters and climb back over that cliff....still.
