Our Throwback is Alexandra "Alex" Marick Devane, Anna Devane's, twin sister. Her character is the subject of much General Hospital Social Media speculation. So, we thought it would be a good time to highlight the other Ms. Devane.
Alex, played by Finola Hughes, first soap sighting wasn't in Port Charles, it was in Pine Valley on All My Children in 1999. Dimitri Marick was on his way back home to Pine Valley when he fell ill and died. His distraught brother, Edmund Grey, wanted an autopsy to determine the cause of death. That's when Alex came out of hiding and introduced herself to her new family. "I'm Mrs. Dimitri Marick. As Dimitri's wife, I have decided we won't have an autopsy. Nice to meet you all."
As with any newcomer. her presence was met with some skepticism from Dimitri and Edmund's family, friends and loved ones. Erica Kane led the skepticism charge. Now, we all know Erica's skepticism had more to do with the fact that Dimitri had a new wife than Alex herself. Others like Brooke English and Peggy Moody were believers and could see that Alex really loved Dimitri. Even so, it was a general consensus that she was acting somewhat odd. Their suspicions were heightened when Alex refused to share Dimitri's medical reports and wanted a closed casket funeral.
Edmund's keen spidey senses kept him in pursuit of what was really going on. In his pursuit, he opened what was supposed to be his brother's casket but it was empty. Alex had no choice but to come clean that Dimitri was alive but very ill. Dimitri didn't want his family to see him in such a weakened condition so he faked his death. Edmund wouldn't let his brother give up. He urged and encouraged him to fight. Dimitri agreed to stem cell therapy. To everyone's relief, the treatment was working. Then one day Dimitri drifted near the ocean where his dressing gown was found. He was presumed dead.
Alex and Edmund had the "I start off not liking you but eventually we fall in love story." Alex began having disturbing fragments of memory. She wondered if she was losing her mind or maybe she was not Alex but rather was her look alike, Anna. Neither proved true. The truth was Charlotte, who Alex thought was her mother, had brainwashed her. Charlotte made Alex become a secret agent in a terrorist organization. Charlotte wanted Alex to kill Anna. When Alex didn't, Charlotte's people did. They put false memories in Alex's head to make her think she was Anna. Charlotte planned on killing Alex but Edmund rescued Alex first.
Before Charlotte was taken away she had some parting words for Alex. "Oh yeah, by the way I'm not your mother. And your actual mother is your daddy's cousin. And your real momma had twins. I convinced her that you were stillborn. I took you. And there is a reason why you look exactly like Anna, that's your twin sister. Have a nice life. " That's how we think it should have gone down. LOL.
After digesting all that, Alex was ready to settle down with Edmund. Whoever settles down on a soap? Just about that time Dimitri was back. He wasn't dead. Charlotte had him kidnapped and he fought and had gotten away. Alex was like Edmund who? She and Dimitri were together until Alex vanished. Dimitri thought Edmund had kidnapped her. He hadn't. Alex left voluntarily.
An older man Bart had been taking care of a much alive but gravely ill Anna. They had to keep a low profile because Charlotte was still out to kill them. He found Alex and asked for her help with her sister. Alex flew Anna to a hospital to get care and pretended that Anna was her. They were discovered but Anna was treated and recovered.
A persistent Charlotte sent a brainwashed mute Gabriel, who was also Alex and Anna's, half brother, to kill Anna. When that foiled Charlotte sent Irene to take Anna out. Irene came to Wildwind under the cover to make a documentary about Dimitri's niece. Neither of Charlotte's assassins were successful.
Alex believed all that had transpired was proof that she was a curse on the entire family. (Erica was shouting Amen! from the back of the church.) Alex believed she had done more than enough damage in two years. She and Dimitri left for Hungary in 2001. She and Dimitri would divorce later.
Soap fans are so smart and savvy. Long before it was confirmed on our screens, it was already correctly guessed, that after about a sixteen-year gap, Alex was back. She had assumed Anna's life. Not too long after the real Anna was diagnosed with Cancer, she went to London. There Alex drugged Anna and kept her against her will. There were a few tell signs it wasn't Anna. a) "Anna" was acting strange. b) Valentin Cassadine swore he knew Anna, and that they had history. Yet Anna hadn't a clue to who he was. Then all of a sudden Anna received some help with her memory and she remembered everything. c) Anna didn't recognize Nathan and blamed it on her Cancer meds.
Alex had taken extreme measures to take over Anna's life. But we had questions. Why? What did it have to do with her obsession with Valentin? And what in the world was this Chimera Project?
We continued to receive pieces of the puzzle over the next few weeks. Alex, faux Anna, was made by Emma, Anna's granddaughter, at the airport when she was trying to get out of town (a confrontation with Valentin had left her tied up at the bottom of the staircase at Anna's house). Kids sometimes can be much smarter than us adults! Anna had escaped from captivity and had arrived back in Port Charles. Alex and Anna faced off and our questions were answered.
Alex worked for the DVX (WSB's rival agency). She was ordered to get close to Valentin and to seduce him because he had access to dangerous and classified information. Alex impersonated Anna and was assigned to steal the Chimera Project, a deadly biotoxin, from Valentin. When the time came for Alex to kill Valentin she couldn't. Alex had broken the cardinal rule of spy life. She had become emotionally involved with her mark.
Instead of taking Valentin out, Alex took a long shower and left the kill instructions out where Valentin could see them. He got ghost with the Chimera. So when Valentin resurfaced in Port Charles, Alex stepped in and took action to correct her mistakes from years before. But just like before she had failed. She had tried seducing Valentin and had planted a listening device in a watch she gave him. But she still had no Chimera. Alex told Anna it was up to her to find it. Alex was taken into custody.
The last time we saw Alex she had escaped WSB custody and visited Valentin at the police station in Port Charles where he was in custody. She reminded Valentin that they still needed each other. The WSB had no case against him that he had stolen the Chimera and sold it to Helena Cassadine without her testimony. And they had no proof of what had happened between them, if Valentin remained silent. Alex then got the heck on out of dodge.
Very recently a Dr. Cabot stunned Anna when he told her that all of her memories weren't her own. Our first thoughts were does this mean Peter is Alex's son and not Anna's? Would you like Alex to return to Port Charles? Do you think General Hospital had this in mind all along? Or is this a rewrite to a rewrite?
We are in favor of Alex returning. You can never have enough of Finola!
*That move when Alex pinned Nina....good soap.
