There are several couples on soaps we will never forget and Santa Barbara's Eden and Cruz is one of them. Check it out here--->>
Our trip down memory lane this week for our Super Couple Throwback includes a trip to the Pacific Coast. We are visiting Santa Barbara and their Super Couple Cruz and Eden. Every Super Couple has its own special aura. It's own something-something. It's own je nesais quoi, if you will. Yes, that is kind of stating the obvious because that's partly what makes a couple, super. Cruz and Eden's je ne sais quoi was their insane chemistry. It was off the charts. They sizzled, crackled and popped.
Cruz Castillo and Eden Capwell were from different economic backgrounds. Not a big deal there, as this is a common theme for soap and super couples. But this super couple was different, very different than most. The characters were also of a different race. Not exactly something you see everyday in couples in soapland. And to be a supercouple? Yeah, definitely not something we hardly ever see in soapland, especially now. A poor man of Mexican heritage, Cruz, coupled with The All American rich girl, Eden. Man, they absolutely don't make them like that anymore. A bi-racial super couple. Those were the days. And the word was A. Martinez and Marcy Walker saw the potential in the coupling and pushed TPTB until they put Cruz and Eden together. Thank you soap gawds for Marcy and A's vision, foresight and persistence.
We always notice the "little" things about our favorites don't we? Even today we remember how Eden would flip her hair over and smile at Cruz. And Cruz would look at Eden with that yearning in his eyes. Nobody did yearning like Martinez; nobody.
Eden's father, C.C. Capwell and Cruz's mother, Carmen, opposed a relationship between them at first. Let's tally it up; economics, race, family. That's plenty angst. No worries. The fire that ignited in Europe where they first met exploded into a love in Santa Barbara that would sustain them through all of their ups and downs until....soap fate took a painful brutal, turn for the Super Couple. We still weep over that ending. But we will come back to that. First, we will recap this iconic Super Couple's journey.
Cruz and Eden met off-screen, before their on screen appearance, in Europe on the Orient Express. They had an affair that ended badly when Eden discovered Cruz was a secret agent. Later, Cruz came to Santa Barbara when C.C. Capwell asked him to come to the site of one of his oil rigs that was burning to help. Some weeks later, Eden made her Santa Barbara debut parachuting out of a plane. Cruz and Eden were back in each other's orbit and it was on. A little background for those who don't know; Eden worked for the family business (at first) and Cruz became a cop.
Cruz and Eden did the typical "will we or won't we" dance. They succumbed to their feelings after Cruz rescued Eden when she was kidnapped by the Carnation Killer. They got engaged. Their first attempt at getting married was halted because of a fire at the Orient Express where the wedding was being held (Eden's restaurant at the top of the Capwell Hotel). Before they could try again, Cruz had to arrest Eden's mom for the murder of her brother Channing, Jr. when new evidence came to light. Eden couldn't get past it and they broke up.
Some time later, C.C. collapsed, went into a coma and was put on life support. Eden who knew her daddy didn't want to be kept alive that way pulled the plug. C.C. didn't die but Eden was laden with guilt. Cruz who wasn't a supporter of euthanasia couldn't give Eden the understanding she so desperately needed. Kirk Cranston though, who wanted Eden for himself, stepped up and was her "life support". The two married. The real kicker was Eden hadn't pulled the plug. Instead it was her father's wife, Gina DeMott, who drugged and set Eden up to make her think she had.
Kirk and Eden's marriage was doomed from the start. Kirk realized he was married to Eden but her heart was with Cruz and he threw her in a shark tank. Cruz to the rescue. Cruz in the interim had married his old friend, Santana Andrade, to help her get custody of her son. Cruz and Santana divorced. Cruz and Eden reunited. All was well up until Cruz's ex, Victoria Lane (Tori) who wanted to win him back, arrived. Eden's green eyes caused her to bring Tori's possessive ex, Martin Ellis, to town. Cruz wasn't exactly feeling Eden's green eyed monster look and broke up with her.
Cruz and Eden found their way back to each other and planned to marry in Utah. This time it would be Eden's illegitimate psycho step sister, Elena Nikolas, that thwarted the nuptials. She threw Eden over a cliff and left her for dead. She was found and rescued by Cain. Eden was paralyzed but alive though Santa Barbara presumed her dead.
A paralyzed Eden returned home and Cruz worked hard to convince and show Eden that he loved and wanted her regardless if she could walk or not. Then Elena was murdered. Cruz was arrested, put on trial and then eventually cleared of her murder. Praise the soap gawds, finally, finally, did I say finally; Cruz and Eden were married in Pebble Creek in a romantic beautiful ceremony.
As we know being married means next to nothing in soapland. Cruz and Eden would face continued obstacles that would affect their relationship. Cruz discovered he had a son by Tori. Eden was raped, became pregnant and it was feared that the baby was the rapists'. She wasn't. Adriana was Cruz and Eden's. Robert Barr, Eden's ex, would come to town to reclaim his one true love Eden. He tried. He got close real close but he didn't. While investigating a drug lord, Eden was kidnapped, almost drugged to death and was in a coma. She recovered and Cruz sent her to Paris for her safety. When Eden returned home, Cruz was kidnapped and had to be rescued.
Okay, unfortunately now we must return to their ending. It was discovered/written in that Eden had suffered from a split personality (Lisa) since her adolescence. Lisa was birthed out of Eden's psychological, mental and emotional imbalances derived from her history and issues with her mother. Lisa was a jewel thief. Her accomplice, came to Santana Barbara and threatened to expose Eden's criminal past. He blackmailed her into working with him again. It wasn't long before Cruz took care of that and him. But he couldn't rid himself or us of Lisa. She stuck around and "they" (Eden/Lisa) left for the ocean and Cruz followed them. Lisa told Eden she needed to die. Eden/Lisa were on a cliff off the ocean. Eden/Lisa threatened to fall over with Cruz (and me) pleading with her not to. Her foot slipped. Cruz caught her hands and she dangled on the edge of the cliff. Her fingers slipped through Cruz's fingers and she fell into the water.
Marcy Walker returned to Santa Barbara but not Eden. She was never seen again. That was how Cruz and Eden ended with him yet again trying to save his Eden, our Eden. But she slipped through his fingers into the ocean. Wailing. Wailing. Wailing. Oh how I wailed.
*****Marcy Walker left Santa Barbara. We always understand and support daytime actors who pursue other opportunities. We don't fault her at all. However, you must wonder why the show runners wasted Marcy's final weeks with her playing other personalities. Why?
The twist was Eden/Lisa's fall wasn't accidental. It was orchestrated by Lisa. She returned to Santa Barbara as Suzanne Collier (an artist). Then she was her brother, Channing. "Channing" shot her mother, Sophia, for revenge for the real Channing's death. Channing and the rest of the personalities drove off in a limousine never to be heard from again.
Cruz searched for her but she wasn't to be found. Eden (or whomever she was) sent Cruz divorce papers and urged him to start a new life. The next year Cruz left for Mexico to try and do just that.
Cruz and Eden's ending crushed our very soap spirit. But we will always remember them as the iconic bi-racial Super Couple with insane chemistry whose heroine flipped back her hair effortlessly and whose hero yearning eyes burned into her soul and ours.
This one wasn't easy to write. Loved them sooooooo much!
Cruz and Eden; lives on in our hearts!
