Freddie Smith talks Days of Our Lives, Wilson, his book, The Pivot Principle, his upcoming wedding and much more. Check it out here--->>>
We had the awesome opportunity to speak to Freddie Smith (Sonny, Days of Our Lives) while he was on set. Freddie was kind enough to talk to us while on break. We discussed Freddie's courageous decision to pursue his dreams, Days, Wilson, his upcoming nuptials, his book, The Pivot Principle, and more.
Freddie is from the small town of Ashtabula in Ohio. Freddie usually tells people he's from Cleveland (Ashtabula is 60 miles away) since most people have never heard of the small town. Freddie is an only child. "I was very fortunate. I grew up in a loving household with wonderful parents." Freddie's childhood like most consisted of school, friends and fun. His sports of choice were baseball and basketball, which Freddie played pretty much all year round.
Freddie came to that pivotal point in life when he had to start asking himself that question, What's next? As much as Freddie loved playing sports, there was nothing outside of sports that grabbed him enough that he wanted to major in in college. "There came the time I had to start thinking about what to do after high school. If I wanted to continue to pursue sports, college was an option. But there was nothing that interested me enough to pursue my education further in a traditional way. So, I decided to try something different, acting." Now, acting grabbed him. "It just clicked for me. My senior year, I started taking acting classes in Cleveland on the weekends and I took a theater arts class at school."
Regardless of the fact that it hadn't been that long, acting set Freddie's soul "on fire". Nothing ever had before other than sports. That was sure some kind of flames. Shortly after graduating high school, a seventeen-year-old young man from the small town of Ashtabula, Ohio packed up and moved across the country to L.A. to pursue his dreams. "Acting set my soul on fire like sports did. And I said this is what I'd like to do for a living. I decided to take the big leap. I just packed up my car, drove out to L.A. with my friend and the rest is history. You know, then in 2006, there wasn't YouTube or Instagram or any of those other platforms to help you make a career. You had to go where the opportunities were, so that's what I chose to do."
Freddie worked odd jobs; Doggy Day Care, American Eagle, and Outback Steak House. His first television appearance was on the drama, Medium (NBC). He actually appeared with Jennifer Lawrence (before she was J. Law). It didn't pay Freddie enough for him to quit his day job. But Freddie had been on TV. He had his first gig! Fortunately, later on, Freddie landed a few national commercial accounts that paid him enough to be able to quit his serving job. He was then able to audition and pursue his acting career full time. Next, he was cast as Marco Salazar on 90210 in December 2010. He played Marco for a few months until March 2011.
Three weeks later, Freddie landed the iconic role of Jackson "Sonny" Steven Kiriakis on Days of Our Lives. We fell in love with iconic Sonny, the first openly gay character, on Days, and the one half of the iconic supercouple, Wilson. We have thoroughly enjoyed following both journeys. Sonny is a chip off the Justin (we love him too) block and is a really great guy. So, we were curious if after eight years, Freddie ever wished Sonny would reach back one more generation and maybe be more like Grandpa Vic. "I do. I think because of the importance of Sonny and the importance of the storyline at the time that him being this really nice guy and wearing his heart on his sleeve was a part of his character. Plus, his parents (Justin and Adrienne) on the show are so sweet. Sonny has had a couple of dark moments. But now that he is maturing, I would like it selfishly as an actor. I think it would be cool to give him an edge. Maybe something happens with the character that he loses himself for a few months like hit his head or he starts drinking. Something that would affect the good person that he is. I'm not sure if people watching would like it. They love Sonny. He's a very well liked character. But I think it would be fun to explore for at least a little while." Count us in. We saw a glimmer of this in the Leo storyline. We are more than game for more.
When Days dropped that fire summer promo that sent social media, deservedly so, into a frenzy everyone was trying to guess who were the four weddings. We have seen on screen this week that one guess was right. Wilson! We are getting a Wilson wedding! But Will is still fighting for his life. "Sonny is going to stop at nothing to help the love of his life. He just got him back. Will is going in and out of being positive and negative which is normal for anyone going through a life and death situation. They just need each other and need to express their love for each other. I always say Wilson forever. We'll see if we can continue that."
Freddie told us as great as what we are seeing now is; for us to hold onto our hats because we haven't seen nothing yet. As always, we asked for a nugget, something, anything about what's down the line. "I would love to give you everything. Laughter. You can't imagine what I could share about what we are doing today. It would blow your mind. It is going to be awesome. I really feel like the Day of Days teaser trailer that they play every November is going to reveal some cool stuff. The other day Galen (Gering, Rafe, Days of Our Lives) and I were in the make-up room going over each other's storylines. Galen said 'This is some good stuff.'" Freddie is such a tease! LOL. It's going to be good, fam.
The excitement Freddie feels about what he's currently filming and not being able to share is the only challenging aspect about Days' production schedule (filming so far ahead) for him. He would love to be able to speak about the things he is so excited about and share his enthusiasm with fans. Hey Freddie, anytime you need to unload your enthusiasm, contact us. We can keep a secret! LOL. Freddie assured us, "the audience will enjoy and be able to see how this crazy story continues to unfold episode after episode." We are ready!
As we said, Freddie was speaking to us while he was on break so we were trying to get in as much as we could. Of course, we had to congratulate him on his engagement to Alyssa Tabit and upcoming nuptials. Freddie and Alyssa are very active on social media. Therefore, Freddie wanted to post the proposal. That made it tricky to try and maintain an element of surprise with a camera present coupled with the fact that Freddie and Alyssa had been discussing becoming engaged. Freddie wasn't deterred. He got creative. We love this story. "I thought how am I going to surprise her when there is a camera? She will think, 'Oh we talked about getting engaged and now there is a camera.' It would ruin the surprise. We do a lot of photo shoots and press stuff. So, I thought what if I set up a fake photo shoot? There was this wonderful company, Samba Sol (they make flip flops), I had met years before. I really liked their energy. I emailed them and told them what I wanted to do. 'I want to set up a proposal by setting up a photo shoot Would you be interested? We will film it. It will help bring brand awareness to your brand. We could get lots of views and help each other out.' They were all for it. They emailed Alyssa professionally and said, 'Hey do you and Freddie want to do a photo shoot.' We did the shoot. It was at this beautiful Malibu home over looking the ocean. When we were done, I grabbed the ring from my bag, dropped to one knee and proposed. I had set it up that we could stay in the house overnight. And I also had her parents and friends hiding in one of the rooms and she got a chance to see them. I set it up as a three step surprise. I really wanted to make it special." How romantic! Freddie that was very special! If you haven't seen it, it's on YouTube. Check it out.
The happy couple hasn't set a wedding date yet. Freddie told us that this summer him and Alyssa would be spending time with their families to sit down and plan the wedding. We do know three things for sure about the wedding; everything is on the table, it will be in 2020 and it will be streamed on Facebook Live. So, technically all of us are invited! Yes!
A Facebook live wedding is apropos for this couple that loves sharing their lives with their loved ones and their fans. Their openness is also an avenue they use to help others. Freddie and Alyssa are co-authors of the self help book, The Pivot Principle. This couple is an "open book", literally. We love this story how the book came about too! "Alyssa and I have been together now for eight years. Aside from our love story, we also had a few tragedies and we also had a lot of different success points. We realized we had a lot to share with people. One day Alyssa made the suggestion that we should start writing everything down. After 6 months, we had a lot of stuff. Alyssa made another suggestion that we should create a book because it could really help people. It was kind of like an accidental thing. We didn't say, 'Hey, let's go write a book.' It was more of we have all these great experiences, people enjoy our stories and we are helping them. We wrote the book and self published it. Within a few short months, it sold out. Now, we are pursuing an agent and a publisher to see if we can take it to the next level. It made us happy that our "little side hustle" turned into something great." Isn't that great? Freddie and Alyssa have it going on! Freddie is one half of a supercouple in reel and real life!
Freddie's life sounds full and pretty fantastic. He shared more. "It's a little early to tease this but it will be fun to look back, if we can pull this off. We wrote a film and we are in the process of trying to sell it. We are proud of the script. It's a comedy. It's a lot of fun. We are getting back to our roots in entertainment. Perhaps, we will be able to star and write a feature film on Netflix or some other big company one day."
Freddie has much to be excited about and to look forward to! Days has him excited! He's engaged! The book! And maybe a feature film! We couldn't be happier for him and Alyssa. Even with our short time speaking to Freddie, we could tell, he like Sonny, is a great guy. We wish him and Alyssa continued happiness and success!
In closing, Sonny did have a message for his fans; "The fans are the ones who have created everything that we get to live in; Days of our Lives, the book, the movie and all of our projects. It's because of them who tune in every day and become invested in these characters on the show. We appreciate them so much. They give us so much love. They send us gifts. They shower us with positivity online and in this day and age, you don't always get that. It's all the fans of Days, Sonny, Wilson and of Freddie and Alyssa's as well. Everyone has been so kind and we can't thank them enough. We thank them for their time, attention and support; it means the world to us."
Thank you for talking to us, Freddie!
Best of Luck with everything!
