Kristen Alderson talks GH, One Life to Live, new projects and more. Read more here --->
We recently got the opportunity to catch up with the wonderful Kristen Alderson. Kristen was just the sweetest and I had the best time getting to know her a little better. We talked about life, new projects and if we would ever see her in soaps again.
Kristen got her big start in the soap world when she landed the role of Starr Manning on One Life to Live back in 1998. She played the role until the end of the series back in 2012 and continued the role on General Hospital until 2013. She was honored with a Daytime Emmy win for Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series the same year. She then assumed the role of Kiki Jerome on the same soap until deciding to take a break from soaps in 2015.
Her character on One Life to Live was a fan favorite and other than being constantly kidnapped, she was involved in a major storyline revolving around teen pregnancy when Starr and her boyfriend Cole found out they were going to have a baby. The story received plenty of media coverage about how the show was bringing awareness to the important issue.
Kristen literally grew up on the screen and on the set of One Life to Live. So, we asked her what she took away from her time in soaps. "The majority of my life I spent working on soaps. So, it's hard to pick one thing that has stood out." She stated that One Life to Live gave her a family outside of her own. "On One Life to Live, the way everyone worked together was so great. It was really was like a community effort. We were all so close that after work we would all spend time together. The cast and crew were all so cool. The camera guys were like uncles to me. They all protected me, and it really gave me a sense of family in the workplace."
Kristen told us that she still loves soaps and that when she decided to leave General Hospital back in 2015 that it wasn't because she didn't love what she was doing. "I just needed a break. I loved what I did. It was just that I had done it for eighteen years." Her family had also just moved back to Pennsylvania and she didn't want to be away from them for another three years. Soap operas were all that she has known career wise so making the decision to walk away was "really difficult" for her, but she was ready to take that step back and live a normal life for a while.
I know many people would love to see her back in the genre one day to which Kristen said: "I would totally love to come back to soaps." She noted that she reached out to General Hospital letting them know that she would be interested in making her comeback to Port Charles. She also mentioned her love for CBS soap The Young and The Restless and thought it would be cool to maybe check it out as well.
Since Kristen left soaps back in 2015, she has been hard at work on the stage. For the last year, she has played Cindy Lou in the Off-Broadway show The Marvelous Wonderettes. "I love theatre. The theatre is so much fun. That's a big dream of mine is to get back on the Broadway stage." Alderson played Molly in the first Broadway revival of Annie in 1997 before joining the cast of One Life to Live. The Marvelous Wonderettes closed in January, but the cast was brought back for one show a week and just finished up their last show. "The last show was sad, but we had already had our goodbye party back in January. It was an easier goodbye this time."
Kristen also recently teased an upcoming project with some behind the scenes fun on social media. We got to see her with her mother, fellow OLTL alum Robin Strasser, and good friend Tom D'Angora as they were shopping for a wedding dress for her role in a new short film. She couldn't share too much about the project at this time. But she did describe the film as a "sci-fi musical" which definitely sounds interesting! She was given a $250 budget for the dress so they decided to make a fun shopping trip out of it. "It was so much fun. We ended up finding a dress for two hundred dollars. It was just perfect for the role, but it definitely wasn't a dress that I would pick for my wedding. It was just strictly for the character. [Laughs]"
She also let us know about a pilot she filmed for a show called Mélange. The show which stars Alderson along with Morgan Fairchild, Diana DeGarmo, David A. Gregory, Robert Newman and more. The pilot was filmed last year and is now being shopped around to different networks and festivals.
When Kristen isn't busy working she is loving life with her family, friends and fur babies. She is especially enjoying her fun and quiet summer at the moment. Kristen also has been spending a lot of time recently with Robin Strasser which makes this One Life to Live fan's heart happy. "We just go around the city and get in trouble," Kristen said that she and Robin love to get lunch and chat about life. They also love to look at houses online and envision how they would decorate them. Can we please turn that into an HGTV show?!
Kristen also is a huge fan of music and makes sure to always listen to Spotify's New Music Friday playlist to discover new artists and songs. "I'm the type where if I love a song I'll listen to it until I kill it." Same girl.
So, what's next for Kristen? Of course, she is always working on finding consistency in her career whether that be with television or stage, and said she's "always been the type to say whatever is meant to be." She has goals and wishes for her life and career, but she is just "here for the ride" of life.
Kristen also wanted to relay just how grateful she is for her fans who continue to supporters after all of these years.
We would like to thank Kristen for her time and for a great interview. We wish her continued success and cannot wait to see what she does next!!
