General Hospital is getting a new co-head writer!
According to TV Insider, Shelly Altman's last day on the soap will be August 2nd and the remainder of her material will air over the coming months. The news was also first reported by Daytime Confidential back in June. Altman has served in several different positions at GH since 2011 including head writer where she earned two Writers Guild of America Awards. She also won two Daytime Emmys for her writing on The Young and the Restless and One Life to Live. Executive Producer, Frank Valentini, had this to say to Altman: "Shelly, thank you for years of complex, emotional, intriguing story. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors."
Since Altman is retiring from her position that leaves her spot open for someone already in the General Hospital family. Dan O'Connor, who has been with the show since 2011, will move up from his position as a breakdown writer to serve as co-head writer along with Chris Van Etten. "These two understand the canvas and the characters," says Valentini. He also noted the pair's passion and creativity they bring to the show and its future.
Soap Opera News wishes Shelly Altman the best in her retirement. And we are looking forward to seeing what stories will come our way thanks to Van Etten and O'Connor.
