Honorable Mentions
1. Carly/Jack/Julia (As The World Turns)
Photo: CBS
Jack Snyder met Julia Lindsey on a train to Chicago after breaking things off with Carly Tenney. Jack was instantly drawn to Julia and aided her in escaping her controlling fiance. She followed him back to Oakdale where they entered into a relationship that was short-lived thanks to Jack's ongoing feelings for Carly. Jack and Carly would reunite....and break up once again due to Carly being blackmailed and forced to lie to Jack before their wedding. A heartbroken Jack reconciled with Julia again and the two married. Of course, the attraction that Jack had for Carly despite her lies would cause trouble within the marriage. This and the fact that Julia miscarried her baby with Jack would send her into a spiral that included drug use, kidnapping, trying to force Jack to impregnate her again....and the killing of a horse. RIP Flashdance! Julia would eventually be caught and CarJack was free to continue on with their roller-coaster relationship.
2. Philip/Chloe/Brady (Days of Our Lives)
Photo: NBC
Teenage angst at it's best! Young Chloe had two men who loved her, Philip and Brady. Her growing friendship with Brady caused problems in her relationship with Philip. Chloe would eventually break things off with the jealous Philip and start dating Brady. Their love was threatened by Chloe's leukemia diagnosis. Brady stayed by her side through it all, but once she was in remission she got the offer of a lifetime to sing in Europe he knew he had to let her go. After sometime Chloe came back into town badly scarred due to a car accident. Brady fought to make her believe that he could love her despite her scars. The two would marry and leave town. Unfortunately, Brady would develop a drug problem and they would divorce. Chloe would reunite with Philip for a while, but he could never fully commit to her. She remains friends with both men to this day.
10. Nikki/Victor/Ashley (The Young and the Restless)
Photos: CBS
It's common soap knowledge that Victor Newman and Nikki Newman are THE couple for Y&R. It's also known that one of the biggest threats to their happiness came thanks to Ashley Abbott. Victor found Ashley while she was suffering from amnesia and he brought her home with him to recuperate. The two would grow close during their time together which upset Nikki. Nikki, in turn, would have an affair with Ashley's brother and Victor's biggest rival, Jack. Victor would declare his love for Ashley after his relationship with Nikki ended, but Nikki became deathly ill and Ashley pushed him back to his former lover. Years later Ashley and Victor would have their daughter, Abby after Ashley stole some of Vic's swimmers and artificially inseminated herself. The two would be reunited briefly several years later, but as it was said before...Niktor is endgame.
9. Austin/Carrie/Lucas/Sami (Days of Our Lives)
Photo: NBC
A quadrangle that loves to keep it in the family! Brothers Austin and Lucas have been involved with sisters Carrie and Sami since they were teenagers. Lucas liked Carrie and Sami swore she was in love with Austin. The pair schemed to break up Carrie and Austin so they could be there to pick up the pieces. Their plans would fall through and the two found themselves sleeping together and producing a son. Sami would lie about the paternity of her son in dramatic fashion by interrupting Carrie and Austin's wedding and sharing the news much to Carrie's dismay. Over the years the four would go back and forth in a dizzying fashion. Austin married Sami. Lucas married Carrie. Carrie married Austin. Sami married Lucas. The quad would be a staple in the late 90s and early 2000s of the soap and be at the center of some heated debates. No matter what couple you rooted for you can't deny that they were certainly entertaining!
8. Reva/Josh/Annie (Guiding Light)
Photo: CBS
Everyone knows that Josh Lewis and Reva Shayne are soulmates, but back in the mid-90s on Guiding Light their love was tested thanks to Annie Dutton. Josh and Reva's relationship had ended in 1990 after she was thought to be dead. In 1995, Annie was working at the hospital as a nurse. It was there when she met Josh after he had broken his leg. The two fell for each other rather quickly and after dealing with some things from Annie's past, they decided to get married. Their plans for a happy future were destroyed when they found out...at their wedding...that Reva was in fact still alive. For awhile Josh fought his desire to be with Reva and was adamant that he was in love with Annie. Annie knew better though and went into a spiral of drug addiction and crazy schemes to trap Josh in their marriage by getting pregnant. She ended up getting pregnant via artificial insemination. Josh and Reva continued to fight their feelings for the sake of their children and the child that Annie had on the way. This all came to an end after Annie suffered a miscarriage and set it up to look like Reva shoved her down a flight of stairs during an arguement...ultimately causing her miscarriage. The truth came out during Reva's trial and she and Josh were finally reunited! #JevaForever
7. Sharon/Nick/Phyllis (The Young and the Restless)
Photo: CBS
Whether you are a Shick or a Phick fan. There is no denying that the love triangle between Sharon Newman, Nick Newman, and Phyllis Summers has been one for the ages. After the death of his and Sharon's daughter, Cassie, Nick struggled with the loss and instead of grieving with his wife he sought comfort elsewhere. Phyllis. The two started their steamy affair that inevitably produced a child of their own. Over the years the trio has been on a constant merry-go-round. Nick leaves Phyllis for Sharon. Nick leaves Sharon for Phyllis. Like I said the triangle is a staple among the soap, but I think that their best years together are behind them at this point. Thank u, next.
6. Luke/Laura/Scotty (General Hospital)
Photos: ABC
Laura and Luke are arguably one of soap opera's most defining couples. But before there were Laura and Luke, there was Laura and Scotty. Laura's relationship with Scotty started off pretty rocky and she found herself involved with another love triangle between Scotty and Bobbie Spencer. Bobbie in the hopes to break up the pair enlisted the help of her brother, Luke. Bobbie's plans failed and Scotty and Laura were married. After dealing with the fact that Luke became obsessed with Laura and raped her, she eventually forgives him. The pair kept finding themselves thrown together in some crazy situations and this lead to them falling in love. Laura eventually divorces Scotty and marries Luke. Which ignited a life long feud between the two men. Sometimes a Queen is too much for the man!
5. Bo/Hope/Billie (Days of Our Lives)
Photo: NBC
Bo Brady and Hope Williams Brady are soap couple royalty! It hasn't always been sunshine and roses for these two, unfortunately. A large part of their issues stemmed from the existence of Billie Reed. Hope had "died" several years before leaving Bo and their young son, Shawn-Douglas alone. Eventually, Bo entered into a relationship with Billie after protecting her from some demons from her past. The two became engaged not long after and were set to live their lives as a happy couple. Things changed when Hope came back to town as a woman named Gina who had no recollection of her life before. Bo struggled with her presence but married Billie anyway. The marriage inevitably falls apart and Bope reunites once again. Later on, Bo and Billie would have a child that would cause a rift between Bo and Hope after she causes the death of Bo and Hope's son, Zack.
4. Roman/Marlena/John (Days of Our Lives)
Photo: NBC
Never has there been a more confusing start to a soap opera love triangle! Roman and Marlena had a great life with their children until Roman died after a fight with Stefano DiMera and the body went missing. Sometime later a man showed up in town claiming to be Roman but looked nothing like him. Armed with Roman's memories and that he had extensive plastic surgery, Marlena eventually accepted that this was her husband and the two reunited. Years later the real Roman Brady would show up. In a twist, it's discovered that the man she had thought was her husband was, in fact, an imposter who goes by John Black and had been programmed with Roman's memories. Marlena attempts to reunite with Roman, but her attraction to John is too strong and the two embark on an affair causing her divorce from Roman and producing a daughter of their own.
3. Brooke/Ridge/Taylor (The Bold and the Beautiful)
Photo: CBS
After the death of Ridge's wife, Caroline, he began a relationship with his wife's doctor, Taylor. This upset his former on and off again lover, Brooke. The three of them would embark on an iconic love triangle that has spanned generations. Who would have thought that several marriages, breakups, and children later we would still be seeing the effects of this trio?! It spawned the rivalry between Brooke and Taylor which has been passed down to their own daughters, Hope and Steffy. Brooke may have won Ridge, but #TeamTaylor for life! LOL
2. Steve/Kayla/Jack (Days of Our Lives)
Photo: NBC
It's just a straight fact that Steve Johnson and Kayla Brady are soulmates. So, why did their love triangle with Jack place so high? Well, I couldn't have said it any better than one of our readers @Sun_shine_day. They said that it was a different type of triangle. It wasn't Kayla being torn between two men that she loved. It was Steve being torn between the love of his life and the love that he had for his brother. That uniqueness mixed with the epic storyline is why this triangle is so well-remembered. Steve and Kayla were in love, but Kayla's friend Jack also had feelings for her. Steve discovered after Jack fell deathly ill that he was his long-lost brother. Steve could see how much Kayla's presence helped Jack through his illness and he made the excruciating sacrifice to push Kayla away and towards his brother. Jack would recover and marry Kayla, but no matter how hard they tried Steve and Kayla couldn't stay away from each other. Their affair would cause a wave of disastrous events including Kayla being raped by Jack and Jack almost dying after falling off a roof during a fight with Steve. The three of them would work hard over the next two years to move on from their dark past and become a real family.
And the most iconic soap opera love triangle is:
1. Sonny/Brenda/Jax (General Hospital)
Photo: ABC
When Brenda met Sonny there was an instant attraction...and a sense of the forbidden. Brenda was only 18 when they met and Sonny was in his early 30s! The two entered into a relationship that would come to be defined by their arguments and reconciliations. They would eventually break up which led to Brenda moving on with Jax. Her feelings for Sonny would get in the way of their happiness, but inevitably Sonny's chaotic and sometimes dangerous lifestyle would have her going back to Jax. This hot and messy triangle spanned for almost 2 decades and certainly deserves to be recognized!
