General Hospital's newest rising star, Katelyn MacMullen is shining bright like a diamond with her material on the ABC daytime drama. MacMullen joined the show in October 2018 as Willow Tait and quickly became a fan favorite. It was then, fans became interested in learning much more about the actress and Soap Opera News got the chance to chat with her.
In regards to her background, MacMullen shared, "Growing up, my family moved around a lot! I was born in Los Angeles, where I was introduced to modeling and acting, but stopped when we moved to Reno, Nevada, which is where I grew up for the most part. I was in college for about a year, when I decided to drop out and go back to Los Angeles to pursue acting. I’ve been really lucky, since moving here. I’ve had a great support system including my family, my friends, my managers, and my agents!"
We then talked about her time on General Hospital and she noted, "Joining the cast of General Hospital has been amazing! I’m learning so much, I love who I work with, and I love the story that I’ve been apart of. It’s pushed me in so many ways and I couldn’t be more thankful for this opportunity!"
Surely, MacMullen couldn't have predicted what the future held for her in the soap world. And, never did she think that Willow would become such a fan favorite. MacMullen told us, "Honestly, I didn’t even know that! And that’s really nice to hear! But, no, that is not something I foresaw. I knew going into this that the role of Willow was going to be challenging (which I love!) and I’m so thankful for the support that I’ve received! And I’m so glad that people can relate, and respond to Willow!"
Continue on the subject of fan reaction, MacMullen revealed what are some of the fan responses. "On social media, I’ve received a lot of support, which means the world to me! Some fans will reach out and tell me that they’re really glad I joined the cast. I’ve had a lot of teachers reach out and tell me they’re so glad General Hospital has a teacher now, which is awesome. And I’ve gotten a lot of people telling me, “You should be with Michael!”, or “You should be with Chase!”
As for whether MacMullen and her alter ego are around for the long haul, she shared "Well, things are always subject to change! I am playing a new character on this show, so we’ll just have to see how it all works out! Right now, I love this part, and I’m focused on this job, and I’m grateful to be on this show as long as they’ll have me!"
MacMullen's character, Willow has been romantically paired with Josh Swickard's Harrison Chase and they're often referred to as Chillow. Will this be a couple for the long haul or will Willow find another guy? MacMullen certainly thinks so. She highlighted, "Chillow!!! Haha Yes, it’s been such a pleasure working with Josh. He is such an amazing and talented guy. And we have so much fun working together. I do! I think Willow could possibly get involved with Michael! That’s definitely a possibility. They’re really close and really care for each other, and a lot of people claim that there’s a spark between them! So we’ll see!"
Then there was the subject of Willow possibly being Nina's (Cynthia Watros) daughter and MacMullen shared with us, "That would be crazy!! I think it’d be fun to see that relationship play out though, because, so far they haven’t gotten along... Like at all. And for me, personally, working with Michelle Stafford was an absolute dream! She’s so insanely talented. Working with Cynthia Watros (who has now taken over the role of Nina) would be amazing! She is also so incredibly talented and I’d love the chance to get to work with her. "
Soaps, films and primetime have all been considered as technical genres to work in but for MacMullen she believes, "Soaps (is the most challenging), because you usually get more material and less time! I also like that about soaps though, because I love constantly having something to work on!"
Outside of General Hospital, MacMullen notes, "Currently, I’m working on a potential play at Playhouse West! But besides that, all my focus is on the show!" As for where MacMullen sees herself career-wise in the next five years she tells us, "Honestly, just doing what I love! Anywhere that I can be creative and feel fulfilled in my work, wherever that may be!" In closing, she highlighted, "Yes! I appreciate you! I appreciate your support so much! I also admire your loyalty to the show and it’s legacy!"
We love Willow and we love MacMullen. What say you fans? Who do you really want to see Willow with?
