2019 was an exciting year for soaps! We had a lot of laughs, cries, and heartwarming moments throughout the tumultuous stories that came this year! Here is our ranking of how the shows faired and some of their best...and worst moments!
4. The Young and the Restless
Genoa City started things off with a bang with JT literally climbing out of his grave! The end of that storyline was as satisfying as it could be for what it was. We were happy that he was alive and that his brain tumor was behind his dark descent, but by the conclusion, we were left just feeling meh. The rest of the year continued on the same pattern. We had a lot of great storylines with potential that just never had the follow-through that made it worth it. For example, the rise of Kola. Kyle and Lola are a beautiful couple that along with Theo, Summer, Mariah, and Tessa have the chance to bring the characters in that age range to the forefront. Yet, we’ve mostly only seen them living in boring marital bliss. Of course, we don’t always have to have couples battling adversity, but seeing them building a bookshelf or deciding what color to paint a wall is not something that keeps us interested. They aren’t the only characters that have been wandering around aimlessly this year. We were excited by the return of Michelle Stafford as Phyllis and were ready to see what drama she brought with her. But Phyllis has had no true purpose as of late. She was spying on everyone in her hotel, getting her feelings hurt after a stranger called out her past indiscretions, and begging Adam to be her friend. Come on, YR! There seems to be a glimmer of hope with her story in the new year though!
The Young and the Restless did have some bright spots as well! Victor’s illness brought him closer to Nikki and his children. And we’d never thought we’d see the day that he would hand over the reins of Newman to Victoria. We loved seeing her stand up to him! I’d like to call 2019 the year of Traci Ann Abbott! It has been so good to see Traci actually getting storylines and not just being everyone’s go-to in the hard times! She shined! Jack and Dina also had some beautiful moments that stood out! We had the return of Adam Newman! Mark Grossman has slipped into the role seamlessly and we’re excited to see his dark side more in the coming year as he plots to regain the love of his life, Chelsea!
Sadly, this year we had to say goodbye to Kristoff St. John and his character Neil Winters. Neil’s funeral was heartbreaking and healing. The time that the show took to honor Kristoff and allow cast, family, friends, and fans alike to grieve his loss were the standout moments of the year.
3. The Bold and the Beautiful
2019 was the year of engagements and divorces in Los Angeles! Bold cycles through relationships quicker than anything I have ever seen! At least we get to see Carter every time someone calls it quits! Obviously, the majority of the story this year revolved around baby Beth. We had some truly amazing and Emmy-worthy moments from Annika Noelle, Jacqueline MacInnes Wood, and Scott Clifton! But the story put everyone else to the wayside.
Caroline randomly died offscreen. Maya and Rick broke up offscreen. Taylor has been MIA during some of the most challenging times in her children’s lives. Sally got dropped by Wyatt, got engaged to Wyatt, and then re-developed feelings for Liam in like 6 minutes of screentime! Katie almost died...again. Where is Bill?! And poor Emma was murdered and forgotten about. I don’t know whether to laugh or sigh by the fact that most of these characters screentime have only come from the opening credits!
Like I said earlier, we have gotten some wonderful performances from the cast this year! The fallout of the Beth reveal had everyone crying. You had no choice but to feel for all of the characters. We also saw Matthew Atkinson take on the role of the obsessive Thomas. He’s so good at playing creepy! LOL. Brooke and Ridge’s breakup has also brought the drama and the tears! And we cannot forget about little Douglas! Henry Joseph Samiri is a star in the making! The Bold and the Beautiful has one of the most talented cast and here’s hoping that in 2020 that we get to see more of them!
2. General Hospital
Out of all four soaps General Hospital had the most ups and downs. We went from the dramatic conclusion of Ryan Chamberlain’s reign of terror to the Dawn of Day cult story that took a wrong turn off a cliff. The emotional death of Oscar to Kim’s horrible decision to sexually assault Drew in the hopes of having another baby. And Julian and Peter working hard to better their lives just to abandon ship by the end of the year.
There was a lot of good that came from Port Charles this year though! Mike’s decline due to Alzheimer’s has brought a realistic emotional depth. Franco risking his life to save Cameron and “Drew” doing the same for him. Hayden’s brief return that brought the adorable Violet! Laura becoming the queen...I mean Mayor! The Scorpio brothers taking charge. The recent team-up of Ava and Nina! Actually seeing Brad and Lucas get a storyline! And of course, the return of the dark prince himself, Nikolas! 2020 is going to be explosive with all of the bombshells ready to blow!
I think the best thing that GH has done this year was the resurgence of its teen cast! We love seeing them all together, but Joss, Cameron, Dev, and Trina are fully developed characters in their own right. It reminds of the days with Liz, Lucky, Nik, and Emily! They are all so talented and I cannot wait to see what the show does with them next!
1. Days of Our Lives
Oh, Days of Our Lives! You made us so happy this year! We had the return of Jack Deveraux! Though we will not talk about the months before he got his memory back. Eli and Lani had a great story...and screentime! The team of Stacy Haiduk and Arianne Zucker as Kristen and Nicole was amazing! Claire being her pyro-loving self! The rise of Xander and Sarah as a surprisingly sweet couple. Hattie! Princess Gina! And the return of Stefano as Steve Johnson!
As much as we love the crazy we also love the family and the emotional moments. Doug and Julie had some beautiful moments as he prepared to say goodbye to his love. Jennifer fighting to bring Jack’s memories back and him staying by her side while she was in her coma. The death of Stefan DiMera had us bawling with Gabi! Seeing John and Marlena celebrate one of their many anniversaries was wonderful. This year we also had to say goodbye to the beloved Peggy McCay and Frank Parker who played Caroline and Shawn Brady. The show paid tribute to them both in Caroline’s memorial episode with a beautiful flashback of them dancing in the pub.
Days wasn’t without its faults though. The aforementioned time between when Jack returned to Salem and when he got his memories back sure was something. No memories don’t mean any morals or a heart! We love Ben and Ciara as a couple, but they spent more time trying to force everyone in town to like Ben than they did growing as people in a relationship. We had the amazing reuniting of Eric and Nicole only to ruin it by having her lie to him about his child!
Of course, the best thing that happened in Salem in 2019 was taking us to 2020 early! We got new and interesting stories that were refreshing to see. From the reuniting of the Deveraux family to the unlikely friendship of Lani and Kristen. The mystery surrounding Adrienne’s death and who framed Ben. And surprising new pairings like Justin and Kayla! So many great storylines that are leading into 2020! Days of Our Lives stood out amongst the crowd this year!
