2020 has certainly been a dramatic and strange world on and off-screen! With the return of The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital and The Young and the Restless set to soon follow, we thought now would be a great time to talk about some of the best and most memorable storylines of the year so far! You voted on our recent social media post and this is what you’ve chosen as some of your favorites.
The Bold and the Beautiful: Sally’s Sick Plan
We were heartbroken when Sally (Courtney Hope) was given only weeks to live after becoming increasingly ill and debilitated. It was lovely to see Katie (Heather Tom), who has had her fair share of health concerns over the years, be by her side as she faced death. But Bold quickly threw a wrench and shocked us all when it was revealed that Sally had, in fact, faked her illness to get closer to Wyatt (Darin Brooks) after he dumped her for his high school sweetheart, Flo.
The twisted storyline was one that many never saw coming and also put the incredible Courtney Hope to the forefront with her own story. It gave many characters new and veteran opportunities to shine as their emotions about Sally’s supposed demise took over. The storyline came to its peak this week as a kidnapped Flo managed to foil Sally’s plan to seduce Wyatt. We cannot wait to see what the fallout of her plan will be!
Days of Our Lives: The Phoenix Has Risen Again
As a longtime Days watcher - and a Steve Johnson fan, when I heard that Steve was being brought back believing he was Stefano DiMera I was more than a little concerned. I mean no one can replace the great Joe Mascolo! BUT when Stephen Nichols stepped into the role he left me and many others shocked by how fantastically he embodied the iconic character. It wasn’t an impersonation...it was an homage! And he absolutely slayed it!
While the storyline itself wasn’t a favorite of many viewers, Nichols’ brilliant performance is enough to land it near the top for the year! And bonus points were given because the story gave us more screen time for long-time friends and co-stars Stephen Nichols and Kristian Alfonso!
General Hospital: Molly and Brando, The Unlikely Pairing
Okay! Here us out on this one! General Hospital has had a lot of great material this year - the return of Nikolas Cassadine comes to mind - but we went with the most surprising story of them all! New guy in town, Brando (Johnny Wactor), who seemed like he was getting closer to Carly than Sonny would like, found himself tangled in a mess of Davis girl drama when he slept with Molly. Our perfect Molly (Haley Pullos), who has always been level-headed and in love with TJ, had a one-night stand with a hot stranger?! Scandalous
This storyline had just begun when the production shutdown happened so we don’t know what the fall out will be...and that’s half the fun! Will a guilt-ridden Molly confess to TJ? Will Brando find himself drawn to Molly? Will there be a shocking pregnancy? Or will the secret get out in dramatic fashion? We’re looking at you for this one, Kristina! The options are endless!
The Young and the Restless: Sharon’s Cancer
There was no doubt of what would be our choice for the best Y&R storyline of the year. Sharon’s breast cancer diagnosis and subsequent treatment have been some of the best soap scenes in a long time. The phenomenal Queen that is Sharon Case has been exactly showing why she is a Daytime Emmy winner! It has been wonderful seeing her loved ones - and even Nikki and Phyllis - gather around her as she faces this battle head-on.
The storyline has given great material for everyone involved but the most important part is the education that the story has provided for viewers. Not taking the easy way out, the soap has taken every opportunity to show the real and scary things that a cancer patient has to go through. From the tests and treatment options to the fear and emotions that are felt by everyone around. We cannot wait to see Sharon Case win her second Emmy for this storyline!
