Recast! The word has the ability to strike fear into a soap fan’s heart. It also brings the opportunity to serve as an introduction to some of the best of the best. Last year we did a list of the Top 10 Best Soap Opera Recasts...and you requested more! So, if you don’t see your favorite on this list check the previous one here! That being said...let’s take a look at the top vote-getters this time around.
Honorable Mentions:
Ellen Dolan (As the World Turns)
Ellen Dolan took over the role of Margo Hughes in 1989 after two successful runs from actresses Margaret Colin and Hillary B. Smith. Having previously worked for four years on sister soap Guiding Light, Dolan fit well into the role. She earned a Daytime Emmy nomination in 1993 for Outstanding Lead Actress and stayed on the series until the show’s end in 2010.
Judi Evans (Another World)
The lovely Judi Evans had already established herself as a top-notch soap star with her roles on Guiding Light and Days of Our Lives before stepping into the role of Paulina Cory after Cali Timmons exit. She would go on to play the role for 8 years until the series finale in 1999.
Top 10
Mark Grossman (The Young and the Restless)
The fourth version of anti-hero Adam Newman has quickly made his mark on the CBS soap! Mark Grossman came on canvas in 2019 in the role that was most recently played by This Is Us star, Justin Hartley. The actor impressed fans and critics alike, earning himself an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category in 2020
Wally Kurth (General Hospital)
After future Guiding Light star Kurt McKinney exited the role of Ned Ashton Quartermaine, Days of Our Lives’ Wally Kurth stepped up. In what we consider the perfect role for Kurth, thanks to Ned’s musical career, the actor has made an art of playing dual roles. His outstanding work led to a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2018 and a win in 2002 for Outstanding Original Song.
Amanda Setton (General Hospital)
We adore Amanda Setton as much as all of you do! She has been perfectly cast in the role of Brook Lynn Quartermaine, who was previously portrayed by Adrianne León. We also want to give a shout-out to Setton’s temporary replacement Briana Lane, who has done some incredible work having to step into the role during the middle of a difficult storyline.
Annika Noelle (The Bold and the Beautiful)
After the beloved Kim Matula exited the role of Hope Logan, it was hard to think of anyone who could replace her! Then came Annika Noelle! The actress was able to slip into the role seamlessly all while showing off her beautiful talent. She was put through the wringer with her year-long emotional storyline, which led to her being nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Drama Series at the 2020 Daytime Emmys!
Eric Martsolf (Passions/Days of Our Lives)
The king of recasts, Eric Martsolf, was a shoo-in for our list! He won over fans of Passions’ Ethan Winthrop when he took over the role in 2002. Then in 2008, he became the woman-loving Brady Black on NBC’s Days of Our Lives, winning a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series!
Alicia Minshew (All My Children)
It’s hard to replace Buffy the Vampire Slayer but Alicia Minshew did just that! The actress stepped into the role of Kendall Hart on the ABC soap, which had been formerly held by Sarah Michelle Gellar. Minshew became a fan-favorite as she starred on the show until its end in 2011, earning 2 Daytime Emmy nominations along the way!
Bethany Joy Lenz (Guiding Light)
Before she played on the beloved teen drama, One Tree Hill, Lenz portrayed the teenaged Reva clone on Guiding Light for 9 episodes. After Rebecca Budig’s exit in 1998, the soap brilliantly brought Bethany on to play Michelle Bauer Santos from 1998 to 2000.
Billy Miller (The Young and the Restless)
While Miller’s performance as Jason Morgan received a number of votes, it’s his time as Billy Abbott on The Young and the Restless that lands him on our list! He starred on the CBS soap from 2008 - 2014, winning 3 Daytime Emmys, after coming over from All My Children. Many fans consider him the ultimate Billy Abbott, which is great considering we’ve like six now!
Robert Scott Wilson (Days of Our Lives)
Did you know that Robert Scott Wilson wasn’t the first Ben Weston on Days of Our Lives? The character was briefly played by Justin Gaston before being replaced by Wilson, who had previously portrayed Peter Cortlandt in the short-lived online reboot of All My Children.
Kassie DePaiva (One Life To Live)
Perhaps the greatest recast in soap history? The always phenomenal Kassie DePaiva stepped into the role of Blair Cramer after actress Mia Korf’s exit in 1993. DePaiva won over fans with her talent and relatable nature behind the scenes. And while she is on our list for her OLTL role, she also has been an incredible recast for Days of Our Lives’ Eve Donovan as well, earning Daytime Emmy nominations for both parts.
