Carson Boatman stepped in as an aged Johnny DiMera on Days of Our Lives in 2021. He has been having the time of his life playing the role and recently, viewers got a chance to see another side of the actor's talent as he took on the role of "JoDevil". Soap Opera News caught up with the talented actor who noted, "Oh man, I’m having the time of my life. It’s been a lot of fun to play JoDevil, as people are calling it."
We couldn't help but wonder what his reaction was like when he first learned that he would be the devil's next vessel. "At first, I was a little nervous," he shared as he continued, "I remember I got a call a few weeks before I was set to play the devil. I didn’t know I was supposed to yet but I got a call and it was from Theresa, the head of the hair and makeup department and she said “Hey, how would you feel about going and getting fitted for some contacts next week?” and immediately I was like Oh no, they’re gonna have me playing the devil. So I was a little nervous but who wouldn’t be? I know following Deidre Hall doing anything is pretty hard to do so I think I just took it upon myself to try to figure out how can I play the same devil, just a different way so that I’m not copying or trying to compare, just doing it the way I think Johnny would play."
We also had to ask! Boatman has been so good with switching from Johnny to JoDevil so we questioned if it was challenging. "Well, first of all, Michael, thank you very much for that compliment. I appreciate it. I work really hard to make it appear that way so the difference is easily conveyable to the audience. I don’t necessarily know if I find it hard. I would say I find it challenging but in a really healthy constructive way to my craft. It’s a really fun challenge and the main word I would use to describe it is so much fun."
Were you as disappointed as we were when Johnny broke Chanel's (Raven Bowens) heart? We couldn't bypass getting Boatman's take on it: "Yeah, it’s almost like he’s capable of any type of manipulation if he’s willing to go that far. It was disappointing to me too. I was so sad. I like the Johnny and Chanel story; I really do and I love working with Raven Bowen. She’s an incredibly talented actress. I remember the day or two leading up to that scene where I said ‘It’s not you Chanel, I don’t want to be with you anymore.’ I remember rehearsing it with Raven on Zoom and off stage and every time after finishing the scene I would just be like ‘Raven, I’m so sorry. I feel so bad saying these mean words to you. I apologize.’ She’d go “Oh, it's ok. We’re just acting.” And I was like ‘No, it’s so mean.’"
With the Devil still in Salem, we're sure there's much havoc ahead. Boatman couldn't say much when asked about what's to come except, "buckle up because it is going to get pretty twisty. It’s gonna get wild so don’t miss an episode, make sure you’re tuning in every day cause you really never know what’s going to happen."
Given his outstanding performances on the show thus far, we queried if he would consider submitting for the Daytime Emmy Awards. He shared, "Yeah, absolutely. I think it’s every actor’s dream to just be nominated for an Emmy but I’m definitely going to submit, love to get the nomination, love to get the win. If I just get nominated, I’m happy with that. If I get neither I’m still happy with that because at the end of the day just being a working actor is incredibly fulfilling and there’s always next year."
As many of you know he is also a lover of music. "I don’t have any plans on any music to be released however I do have about 4 or 5 finished singles that I plan to put out over the next year or so." He couldn't help but gush about his time on Days. "To be honest, I’m loving so much, just enjoying the experience of playing Johnny on Days Of Our Lives. I’m just trying to just be in this moment and make sure I can do the best job I can possibly do on this show but I do love music and I will still continue to do that, I just don’t have a definite answer on when the next project or song will be released."
Thanks, Carson for this lovely chat!
