Lydia Look Shows Us Who's Boss! Learn More Here >>>
Soap Opera News recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Lydia Look who plays lady boss Selina Wu on General Hospital and here's what she shared with us about her experiences working on General Hospital!
Lydia Look has been acting for practically her whole life and her screen credits go back to 1994 when she was just a teenager but General Hospital was her first and only soap opera job and she cant say enough good things about what a great cast and crew they have there!
"My experience with General Hospital so far has been really smooth and really a dream. The cast and the crew and the directors that work with me have really helped me a lot and I really needed it because I am going into a new space and I don't know where everything is. I've acted all of my life but as you know, every time you enter a new place it's a completely new environment. If it wasn't for the writers and the crew there would be no us. We're just a product of them."
Lydia told us the story of auditioning years before for a contract role as a doctor on General Hospital and though she did not get that part she was not forgotten! "I really owe the incarnation of Selina Wu to one person and that is Mark Teschner (casting director for General Hospital). Mark has the mind like a steel trap and he never forgets an actor. He might have met you 10 years ago and you think he doesn't remember you then but then when something appropriate in casting comes up, he knows."
Despite being drop dead gorgeous, she gives all of the credit for Selina's visible screen presence to people behind the scenes as well. "The make up, the hair team, wardrobe, they are the best. They make Selina Wu who she is. All the credit goes to them. They are incredible, they really know what they're doing!"
Her co-stars are not immune to the love she has for the all things General Hospital either, especially Maurice Benard and Laura Wright who play Sonny and Carly Corinthos! "When all is said and done I love those characters, the two of them and I love them as people. They are like a dream to work with and I'm saying that from the bottom of my heart."
Lydia dished more on Laura Wright with us, "The person who has made the biggest impression on me on the show is probably Laura. She's really been very, very kind to me. She's taught me a lot and not in a bossy way. I'll tell you one thing that makes me think Laura is a great actress is that she plays a strong woman who speaks her mind and people like to call her a bitch but I tell you, Laura, in real life, is the opposite. That day we were shooting in the car with the bombing was a lot and there were many units and so much going on and she saw something in my hair and immediately called for them to fix it because she wanted me to look good. She was looking out for me. What actress does that? Most wouldn't. She didn't have to do that. She is the lead woman on the show but she took the time and it was very kind of her. She often helps me too when I don't know where the camera is because I'm new and there are so many. She always knows and she'll tell me where to look. She doesn't have to help me but she's a real supportive fellow actress and not only that but she is a superb actress as well so I am really grateful to her."
All in all it seems that being on a soap has given her a real appreciation for the genre. "I learned things going to set that first day. Soap is the hardest job for an actor. You don't get paid a lot because that's just the way it is. It's daytime, which I think should change cause the work they do is just phenomenal. You have to really come and hit the ground running because there is no second take."
Lydia Look certainly hit the ground running at General Hospital and we look forward to seeing more of her portrayal of Selina Wu on the show and you all can look forward to more from our interview with her in part 2 of our exclusive with Lydia Look coming your way next week! We talk about her love for the fans, growing up with soap operas, her second life and she finally settles the questions around Ms. Wu's first name!!
