Fans of General Hospital are buzzing about the pairing of Carly Corinthos, played by Laura Wright, and Drew Cain, played by Cameron Mathison! Crew, as they are called, is building quite a fanbase the more time they spend together and this pairing is something GH is definitely getting right!
As soon as Mathison was announced to be filling the role, some fans started clamoring for Drew to be paired with Carly. The actors had shown their onscreen chemistry years earlier when they were featured in the "What If " series of crossovers that ABC released. Theirs was entitled: What if Carly Corinthos Jacks met Ryan Lavery: How to be bad. Ryan Lavery was Mathison's character on All My Children. The segment was directed by current GH EP, Frank Valentini. You can watch the cute video below.
The two characters have a tumultuous history. When Drew first came to town, played then by Billy Miller, he had no memory and was known as Jake Doe. He and Carly became fast friends and he even asked her to stand up for him at his wedding to Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). Carly was the one who ran the DNA test that seemed to reveal he was her presumed dead former love and best friend, Jason Morgan. Jake stepped into Jason's life and formed a family with Sam (Kelly Monaco), Jason's wife and mother of his son, Danny (Zakary Risinger). The duo had a daughter, Scout (Cossette Abinante).
When the real Jason (Steve Burton) came back, Drew was angry that no one believed he was Jason and cut Carly out of his life. She accepted his decision and later worked to reunite Jason and Sam which caused a bigger rift between her and Drew. We learned that Drew was actually Jason's identical twin which is why their DNA matched. They had been kidnapped and Jason's memories were implanted into Drew.
Carly's daughter Josslyn (Eden McCoy) later became romantically involved with Drew's son Oscar (Garren Stitt). Oscar was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and during this ordeal Carly and Drew buried the hatchet to help their children through it. They never regained their previous closeness but were in a good place when he "died" in a plane crash in 2019.
Last year it was revealed that Drew was actually alive and being held captive by Victor (Charles Shaughnessy) and Peter (Wes Ramsey). He was rescued and came back to Port Charles determined to put his life, and family, back together. He was sad to learn that Sam had moved on with Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) and was happy. He let go of his fantasy of them reuniting and wished her well in her relationship. While he is not often shown with daughter Scout, as is common on soaps, dialogue has told us that he is very active in her life and even coaches her swim team.
Carly and Drew renewed their friendship and both apologized for how they handled things when Jason came back, agreeing to make a fresh start in their friendship. Carly's marriage ended after her husband Sonny (Maurice Benard) cheated with Nina (Cynthia Watros) and Drew has been there to support her through it. She had been hesitant to move their relationship beyond friendship because of her connection to his dead twin, Jason, and being so unsure of the direction her life was heading but had still been drawn to him. Since being home Drew has expressed his desire to put the bad things in his past, including his captivity, behind him and find happiness and he has made it clear that he wants Carly to be a part of that.
They had a few near kisses since her marriage ended but always stopped or got interrupted before it actually happened. They continued to flirt and grow closer though and finally kissed while Drew was manning the grill at a charity picnic at the Quartermaine estate. Their passion quickly kindled and they nearly caused a fire by neglecting the grill while they made out in the boathouse. Fortunately, disaster was averted and Carly again insisted they could only be friends but Drew was encouraged to continue to pursue her.
After she lost her half ownership of the MetroCourt hotel trying to help Drew and her son Michael (Chad Duell) regain control of ELQ, their family's business, Drew was determined to help Carly figure out her next career steps. He set her up with the executive coach, Mia (Vanessa Mathison), who had helped him and Carly took off to attend a retreat in Aruba that she was hosting. After weather issues forced an emergency landing, Carly ended up stranded in her hometown of Jacksonville, Florida and found out that her adopted mom's grave was in danger of being moved due to planned town renovations. She decided to stay and try to fight it. Drew flew down to help her and was a rock for her throughout the ordeal. Her birth mother Bobbie (Jackie Zeman) flew down to offer her support and Drew confided to Bobbie that Carly had been his "constant" since his return.
Ultimately, Carly was unsuccessful in getting the renovation plans changed and she had to move her adopted mother's resting place. With Drew's help, she decided to cremate her and spread her ashes at the beach she had loved when Carly was growing up. The trip was a growth experience for Carly and she was able to make peace with her past and look toward the future, a future she decided should include taking a chance with Drew.
The duo shared tender and romantic moments on the beach in an amazing location shoot! With the sun shining and waves crashing in the background, the couple shared their feelings for each other and made a new start together. Fans were rewarded with many romantic declarations and kisses over the two days the beach scenes aired.
What the future holds for Carly and Drew is anyone's guess. They already have shadows looming over them considering she lied to him about the secret she is keeping about Nina being Willow's (Katey McMullen) mother, his unresolved brainwashing, and there is always the ghost of Jason, her "more than just best friend" and his twin brother. We know Drew still has Jason's memories but there is a question regarding what of his own memories Drew actually has. The show has alluded to him now having at least some of them but how much is still unclear. Fans are hoping they can overcome all of these things and whatever else gets thrown their way.
There are always more beats fans wish a show would play in stories but it can be difficult to hit them all, especially with a cast the size of General Hospital, however, fans of the Crew pairing are pretty happy with how their story has played out thus far. The actors showed their commitment to Crew by embarking on a series of fan events this past summer and the pairing has brought mainstream attention to the show in the form of segments on Good Morning America and Entertainment Tonight. The story is soapy, the actor's amazing chemistry is off the charts, and fans of the pairing are eager to see where their ship goes from here!
