Mignon Von who plays the role of Danni King on Tyler Perry Sistas on BET, addressed the domestic violence storyline. Viewers who tuned in to the weekly primetime episodic which is now in its 5th season would have seen at the end of the episode on Wednesday, that Danni was a victim of domestic violence. In light of the comments and responses received after the episode, Von shared the following statement:
To everyone who's been told what you should've done after surviving an attack, who had to hear "but" after you didn't deserve, everyone who had to hear anything other than support, unconditional love, & empathy- I'm sorry society is not where it should be. I'm sorry that happened to you & I'm sorry some want you to share in the blame of possibly one of the darkest & most traumatic moments of your life. It's not your fault at all. You are not responsible for what THEY did to you. You are a survivor. You are beautiful & worthy! You are supported and not all of us feel that way. I hope this episode wasn't too triggering. Twitter is a zoo but you aren't their opinion. I take my responsibility as a storyteller seriously and I will do all I can to fight for voices like yours & continue to do all I can to humanize you, us, on and off screen, I love you.
Virgin women get assaulted & raped. Sober women, fully clothed women, quiet women, strong women, unfriendly women, WOMEN are assaulted & raped regardless of "decency" the narrative that we do prevents someone else's choice is why we are still vulnerable & it's still happening. It's the narrative of the oppresor to distract us from who is actually at fault. The culture & mindset that tells women had a part to play in our victimization, rather than teaching boys to respect our NO instead of teaching us how not to be raped or assaulted.
