Performers of the Week
This week’s Performers of the Week had it locked down from the second their eyes met in the first moments of Monday’s episode! Maura West as Ava Jerome Cassadine and Adam Huss as her recent ex-husband, Nikolas Cassadine, have been on course for an explosive confrontation for weeks and when it finally happened, General Hospital fans got the payoff they were expecting and so much more! As soon as Ava opened the door to find her ex seething in hurt and anger on the other side we knew we were in for something special and West and Huss did not disappoint. As they went through what had led to the breakdown of their marriage and the fallout that had resulted, the powerhouse acting duo went from flaming anger to soul-crushing pain to mournful regret and then back to anger dripping with a desire for vengeance that made the audience gasp. After Nik had explained to Ava that he hadn’t actually cheated on her with Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) and why he had let her believe he had, West beautifully portrayed Ava’s growing regret at weaponizing Nik’s son Spencer(Nicholas Alexander Chavez) against him and you saw the glimmers of hope when he tenderly told her that he had hoped for them to work through it all and reconcile only for him to crush that hope moments later when he threw in her face that her actions would prevent that from ever happening. Huss played Nik’s regret and pain perfectly and you found yourself rooting for him even though he has been the villain in the story for almost a year. Then came the moment no one saw coming, Nik threatened Ava that he was going to take the one child she had left from her in retaliation. The ice in his tone as he spoke to the woman he had once called the love of his life was bone-chilling. Huss released the inner Cassadine from Nikolas and long-time viewers saw his father Stavros (Robert Kelker-Kelly) in him at that moment. West’s portrayal of Ava’s disbelief turning to desperation was just as compelling to watch and it was hard to blame her for bashing her ex over the head to stop him from taking her child from her. Ava was heartbroken when she realized she had killed her dark prince but her sense of self-preservation quickly kicked in and she did what she thought she had to do to protect herself and took action to hide the fact that Nikolas was dead. Her dreams that night were haunted by him, showcasing how well Huss could portray creepy on top of everything else and he certainly convinced us that even though Ava thinks she has gotten rid of him, he is not gone and he won’t let her, or us, forget him. What makes these scenes all the more amazing is that Huss was only in the role temporarily, not that you would know that by how perfectly the duo played off of each other. Their chemistry and talent have GH fans calling for Nikolas to come back from the dead…again so that he and Ava can continue to love, and hate, each other in such epic ways. Congrats to Maura West and Adam Huss for being named Performers of the Week! We were blown away!
