Performer of the week
Peter Reckell is daytime royalty and Bo Brady, the character he has played for decades on Days of Our Lives, and its spin-off Beyond Salem, is one of soaps' most romantic anti-heroes and half of legendary supercouple, Bo & Hope (Kristian Alfonso). Fans were thrilled when he was announced for Beyond Salem Chapter 2 and then also appeared as a ghost, saving his daughter and newborn grandson on Days itself. It was a visit back to the golden days and we wanted more! The Days higher-ups granted our wish and announced that Bo and his soulmate Hope would be returning to the mothership for an extended run this year. They launched a countdown clock, updated daily for weeks until the day finally arrived that we would see our pairing again. We knew the road to reunion would be rough because after all, Hope believes Bo died of a brain tumor years ago and has no idea that he has actually been brought back to life by his evil high school sweetheart Megan (Miranda Wilson) but having them back on our screens is enough…for now. This week Peter socked us in the gut with his amazing talent and reminded us that he is so much more than just one-half of Bope. His transition from brainwashed assassin to a confused and angry man desperate to find out who he is was astounding to watch and played to perfection by Reckell. He spent almost an entire episode communicating only with expression and movement as voiceovers played around him. The scenes of Bo’s memories returning as he digested the file Megan’s mad scientist Rolf (Richard Wharton) had kept on him were a true masterclass in acting put on for us by Peter Reckell. He exhibited so much emotion without saying a word that our heart’s ached for Bo to finally break through the wall that had built his mind. We rejoiced when cracks started to appear and cheered when he finally stood up to Megan and made his escape from her clutches. Although this is just the start of a long and winding road back to happiness for Bo and Hope, Reckell started it off with a bang and that is why he is our Performer of the Week! Congratulations Mr. Reckell and thank you for the gifts you gave us this week!
