This week's (May 22 - 26, 2023) Couple of the Week is General Hospital's Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros), or Sona as their fans call them. 

Sonny and Nina have had a very tumultuous relationship from the start. When she was in the middle of a breakdown she induced the birth of his daughter with Ava (Maura West) and stole her, intending to raise her as her own. She did time in a mental institute and came out supposedly cured and settled into a life in Port Charles where she and Sonny only associated on the peripheries. He knew that his wife Carly (Laura Wright) was keeping the secret of Nina's being Nelle's (Chloe Lanier) mother and encouraged that to prevent his wife from being implicated in her death. 

Things took an interesting turn when Sonny was presumed dead and showed up in Nixon Falls with amnesia and was discovered by Nina shortly after the truth about Nelle had been revealed to her. She hated Carly but still tried to call her and tell her about Sonny actually being alive but changed her mind because Carly was on the warpath and less than receptive to her call. In her anger at Carly Nina decided to keep Sonny being alive her little secret but then fell in love with him.

Sonny, or Mike as he was known then, fell for Nina too and they started a relationship that was blown up when Sonny got his memory back and lashed out at Nina for not telling him who he was, even though he had told her he didn't want to know. They went back to Port Charles and their relationship was cold at worst and cool at best but the feelings between them lingered. Sonny ended up cheating on his wife with Nina and then after his divorce, he and Nina decided to give it a shot for real.

Their relationship was not well received by many but they fought through that and stuck together. Sonny stood by her side and defended her against his son and other people he cared about. He refused to end things with her to appease them even when it cost him his relationship with them. Sona found a way to make it work and overcome their many obstacles, falling deeper and deeper in love to the delight of their many fans.

We all know there are some rocky times ahead for Sonny and Nina and they will be facing things that will test their bond but this week things between them took a giant leap forward when Sonny fought through Nina's insecurities about her place in his life by getting her to agree to marry him. At first, Nina thought he was just proposing because he felt bad for her but when he showed her the ring he had designed and been carrying around for weeks she was taken aback.

Nina still hesitated to accept his proposal, knowing that she was the one who had anonymously dropped a dime to the SEC about his ex-wife and mother of his children and knowing that Sonny was determined to get Carly out of the legal trouble she was in because of it. Sonny did everything he could to assure her that he knew who she was and didn't care about anything she had done because he loved her and wanted to marry her. He even got down on one knee to propose and everyone knows that Sonny kneels down for no one!

Eventually, Sonny wore her down and broke through her defenses and Nina happily accepted his proposal and agreed to marry him. He slid the ring on her finger and they kissed passionately before going to celebrate their engagement with champagne. The next morning they enjoyed coffee and talked about their happiness before sharing the news with his daughter Avery (Ava/Grace Scarola) and her mother, and Nina's best friend, Ava.

All in all, this was an amazing week for Sona and their fans and no matter what may come for their pairing in the future, the fact that they love each other deeply can not be denied. The amazing chemistry between Benard and Watros is something to see as well. The twosome play so well together and seem to be in perfect sync with their vision of who their couple is to each other.
