This week's (August 21-25 2023) Couple of the Week is Days of Our Lives' EJ DiMera (Dan Feuerriegel) and Nicole Walker (Arianne Zucker), or EJole as their fans call them. 

EJ and Nicole have a decades-long history, both good and bad, some of it very bad, but this time feels different. They're both older, perhaps also wiser, and they know what they want. Neither of them is scheming or plotting against the other and both of them are committed to their relationship for all the right reasons. Yes, they are having a child but they also love each other. This week was a beautiful portrayal of that love. 

There were no grand gestures or romantic love scenes but the ways they were shown displayed their relationship in a beautiful light. It started with EJ having to tell Nicole that her ex-husband, Victor (John Aniston), had died. Her relationship with Victor wasn't a happy one but it had lasted many years and was an important chapter in her life's story. Victor's death hit her in a way she had never expected and EJ was there for her and incredibly supportive of her feelings around it. 

EJ gave Nicole the space and time to talk her feelings through and remember both the good and bad about Victor and was even able to make her laugh. She was skeptical at first when he suggested they skip the big wedding and elope to Italy but he painted such a beautiful picture of how their wedding could be that she couldn't say no. Sadly, those plans were dashed when EJ found out the family jet was otherwise occupied so he quickly came up with an alternative scenario and kissed Nicole before rushing off to secure the paperwork they needed for a marriage license.

When EJ later returned to the house, he became concerned when he saw Nicole touching her growing baby bump with a look of concern on her face. She quickly waylaid his fears by telling him that she thought she felt their baby kicking. EJ tried to feel it as well but couldn't but they were both happy that their child was doing well after the previous pregnancy losses that they had suffered. The baby kicked again and this time EJ was delighted when he could feel it too.

The next morning Nicole went into the room and found EJ had just awoken after having a nightmare about his mother's (Stacy Haiduk) death. She listened as he told her about it and then he went to get dressed. When he came back out, he was amused that she had picked out a tie for him. They laughed about how domesticated they had become and Nicole gently asked him more about his nightmares.

When EJ told her that he knew he had to avenge his mother's death to make them stop, Nicole was very concerned. She tried to tell him that Ava (Tamara Braun) was very mentally ill and not faking but he didn't care. He felt she and Xander (Paul Telfer) needed to pay for what they did to his mother and felt he was the one who had to make sure they did. 

Nicole reminded him that the last time he went to war with Ava, there were casualties and told him that she was worried their child would be caught in the crossfire. He swore that he would take care of her and their child and said that Ava was a threat to them that had to be eliminated. Nicole tried to tell him that his mother would want him to let it go but he was resolute.

Nicole didn't give up on trying to talk him off of the ledge and did it with love and compassion. She finally seemed to get through and he grudgingly seemed to have agreed to let it go for now. Whether or not he can stick to that remains to be seen, but he genuinely loves Nicole and wants her and their child to be safe and happy.

Days of Our Lives fans know that there is a dark cloud hanging over EJ and Nicole that they have no idea about but fans of the pairing were treated this week to beautiful displays of the love these two have for each other and the commitment that they have to their life together.
