Eric Braeden talks Victor's return to power on The Young and the Restless. Read more here...

Genoa City, Newman Enterprises and the Newman family, beware! Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) has retaken his throne, so watch out! But come to think of it, has Victor really ever given his throne up? LOLOL.
Soap Opera Digest interviewed Braeden (Victor Newman, The Young and the Restless) amidst Victor’s latest power moves; taking back control of Newman Enterprises, ousting Adam (Mark Grossman), demoting Victoria (Amelia Heinle) and making Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) the CEO of Newman Media. What a great read hearing Braeden’s take on the Newman family’s current storyline arcs as well as all things Newman.
Fans of the show may have differing reactions and opinions about the most recent shake-up at Newman Enterprises, rest assured Braeden does not. “I think it’s about time we’re back to that! I hate that in-between bulls–t, where he’s neither retired nor [in charge]. It was high time and I loved it!”
It is very interesting to hear Braeden discuss various aspects relating to Victor’s children and Victor’s relationship with them. Braeden shares his thoughts about Victor’s recent demotion of eldest offspring ,Victoria, and points out how it ties to Victor’s suspicion of Nate (Sean Dominic), Victoria’s love interest. “He’s very suspicious of anyone using love or marriage to his offspring as a means to get into the family business. He doesn’t like that. I assume he felt that she is perhaps conniving with Nate. Who knows? He is also innately suspicious, period! Victor grew up as a loner. He has done things all by himself. He doesn’t really, in the end, almost trust anyone.”
Victor’s oldest son, Nick Newman, (Joshua Morrow) has historically swayed from hot to cold (maybe lukewarm to cold?) when it comes to being a part of the family business, he is currently on cold. Braeden had this to say in response to Digest’s question on how he thinks Victor feels about that. “Victor has never overcome the fact that he grew up in an orphanage. Hence, he has always had this extraordinary desire to have his family together as a unit. That is Victor’s pathology, if you will. He does not see that others want to be independent. Children need to be independent and inevitably will leave home. You can’t force the unity. But Victor is so determined because with everything he’s ever accomplished, he has forced his will on it, and he cannot really force his will [on this front].”
What about the family dark horse, Adam Newman? What’s Braeden’s take on the range of fan’s opinions about whether Victor treats Adam fairly or if Victor gives Adam the credit he deserves? “Well, that’s simply not true [that he treats Adam unfairly]. Victor has expressed his loyalty and his support to him many, many times over and has tried to explain to him that it was not his decision for the boy to be raised on the farm by Hope. He wanted him to be raised in Genoa City. I put that in [dialogue] myself because the writers sometimes seem to forget. The facts are and the history was that Hope decided to move back to the farm in Kansas against Victor’s wishes, but he understood [her decision]. So there you are. But what that also really speaks to is how, when certain early psychological impressions are made, they’re difficult to undo. And obviously, Adam always felt left alone and abandoned by his father, which in fact was not the case.”
And then there is Abby Newman (Melissa Ordway), the youngest Newman sibling. It is no secret that out of all of Victor’s children, Abby is the one who has somehow managed to escape the brunt of Victor’s “controlling” tendencies. Digest asked Braeden if he agreed with that take. He did, and they asked why he thought that was the case. “I don’t know! I can’t answer that question. That’s in the writers’ hands. But it’s a very legitimate question.” Indeed, it is!
Earlier this year Braeden revealed that he had been diagnosed with blood cancer and then in August he provided the amazing update that he is now cancer free. Braeden’s diagnosis came at an early stage which he attributes as a major factor to his recovery. Subsequently, he has been very vocal ,encouraging the public, to get their preventive and annual exams. We love Braeden’s advice when it comes to getting those necessary tests and screenings, “Just do it!”
Braeden is extremely grateful for all the love, support and positivity that he has received from people everywhere and knows without a doubt that this also “bolstered” his recovery.
And there is the work that Braeden has gifted the world with for going on forty-five years (and counting), the work that is always there and was a constant, comforting companion during his treatment. “Work is always, for me, and I’m sure for the other actors as well, a different world. You need to totally focus, and I love it. I just love going to work because I work with people that I love being with…We have great fun and we laugh a lot.”
