Performer of the Week
Almost every week, there is a debate about who will be the Soap Opera News Performer of the Week. We each make our picks and then narrow it down to two or three and fight it out until a victor is declared. This week the lists were longer than We've ever seen them, and all the same names appeared. When it came time to narrow it down, we found it was impossible because they were all so outstanding. This left us no choice but to make this week's Performer of the Week, the cast of Days of Our Lives with special recognition of a handful of actors. The work they all turned in was too phenomenal to narrow down to just one.
We'll start with Wally Kurth, who plays Justin Kiriakis. Justin found out that his son Alex was not his but actually his beloved late Uncle Victor's (John Aniston) son and that Victor had kept this secret from him all of Alex's (Robert Scott Wilson) life. His pain over this betrayal mixed with his still fresh grief over Victor's death was heartbreaking and Kurth portrayed it so beautifully that we were all in tears with him.
Robert Scott Wilson also turned in a magnificent performance with this same storyline. His character's questioning of everything he thought he knew about himself was painful and raw. Alex wondering if his hopes of being good because Justin was good and he was his son were dashed, got my tears flowing even more, and when he asked the picture of Victor how this could be true, the ugly crying started. Wilson hit every note, and it was a sight to see.
Zach Tinker, who plays Sonny, was another one who blew us away when he went to visit Alex and did everything he could to try to convince him that nothing had to change. He pleaded with him to recognize that Dad was still Dad and they were still brothers. Our hearts broke with his when he was unable to get through, and we're holding onto hope that someday Alex will be able to hear him.
While Justin was finding out that Alex wasn't his son, Xander (Paul Telfer) found out that Sarah (Lindsey Godfrey) had lied to him and that Victoria was, in fact, his daughter. Xander was overjoyed getting ready to marry Chloe (Nadia Bjorlin) but she couldn't do it because she had found out the truth about Victoria and had to tell him. Chloe has been through so much heartbreak but she broke her own heart this time by calling off her wedding to Xander and telling him the truth, she loved him too much not to.
Even fans of Xander and Sarah had to have felt for Chloe when Bjorlin showed the pain Chloe was in as she ended things with Xander. We hate to see our faves lose or be hurt, but when it is played so beautifully, we're riveted. Xander went to the Pub and confronted Sarah with what he had just learned, and she admitted it was all true. The star-crossed exes went outside to hash it out in private, and what followed was simply great soap. They had the fight that had been brewing between them for a long time, and Xander finally got to hit back at her about the slippery moral high ground she tried to claim. Telfer and Godfrey went head to head and delivered a powerhouse performance for Days fans.
Days of Our Lives has been on fire lately, and this week was a nonstop showcase of that. There are so many exciting stories going on and so many different ways that they can go. The fact that we have such amazing actors playing them out for us is a gift to the fans of the show, and we thank them for that. Congratulations to the cast of Days of Our Lives for being named the Soap Opera News Performer of the Week! Don't ever stop doing what you do!
