Spoilers for Days of Our Lives on October 5, 2023: Chloe and Philip make a life-changing decision. EJ sees a familiar face. Rex gets attacked. Sarah faces criticism for her actions.
Days of Our Lives Episode Recap October 5, 2023: Sarah Has Heartbreaking News For Rex
Ava surprises EJ when she walks into the DiMera mansion. She tells him that she knows that he’s the one who sent the hit woman after her in Bayview. He denies it, but she says that she knows that he did and she’s there to end this. EJ asked what she means, and she motions toward the door. He’s surprised to see Harris walk in with his mother, Susan. Mother and son share an emotional reunion while Ava and Harris look on.
Harris whispers to Av that they should try to get the confession fro EJ that they promised Rafe now that his guard is down. Ava interrupts EJ and Susan‘s reunion and asks Susan if she can help her now that Ava has gotten her back home to her son. She asks Susan to have EJ apologize for sending the hitwoman after her. Susan agrees and tells EJ that he needs to confess his sins and beg Ava's forgiveness.
Susan tells him that she’s alive and he needs to call off the assassin. EJ remembers sending the hitman after Xander and tells his mother that he has to leave right away for a business thing that’s a matter of life and death. He kisses her and tells her he loves her before leaving very quickly. Ava is upset that they missed their chance to capture EJ‘s confession on the wire that Harris is wearing.
He tells her that maybe they should wait and try again when EJ comes back but she doesn’t think that’ll work. She tells him that they should go back to the Salem PD and give Rafe the bad news. Susan comes back into the room and tries to get them to stay for fried bologna sandwiches but Ava tells her that they have to go. Before she does Ava apologizes for everything she did to Susan and Susan forgives her. Susan asks Ava what’s next for her and she shares a look with Harris before telling Susan that she doesn’t know but she thinks they’ll probably send her back to Bayview. Susan tells her that given what happened to her with Edmund it might be the place that she’s the safest.

Susan goes to Marlena‘s office and surprises her with the fact that she is still alive. The two of them share a touching reunion and Susan tells her where she’s been. Susan tells Marlena what happened and Marlena asks who it was that brought Susan to Edmund. Susan tells her that she hasn’t been able to figure that out yet and Marlene tells her that it doesn’t matter, all that matters is that she’s home with the people who love her the most in the world. The women share another hug, happy to be reunited.

Ava walks in on Harris taking his wire off at the Salem PD, and the two of them share a charged luck. He asks her to help him take a wire piece off of his back and she does. Afterward, she tells them that she thinks they’re going to send her back to Bayview, and he says that if they do he’s going too. She doesn't think he needs it but he says that after everything they've been through together, if she is on the inside and he is on the outside then who will he have to watch his back. She jokes that it's a very nice back and tells him that she's crazy, not blind. They smile at each other flirtatiously.

Xander demands to know what Rex is doing at his apartment and Res says that he texted him to come over. Xander denies doing it and Rex shows him the text. Xander tells him that that’s not his number and Rex asks whose it is. Xander tells him that he doesn’t know but since Rex is there they should talk about his baby. Rex tells him that there’s no way anybody would award him custody and tells Xander to give it up. Xander tells him that that’s not gonna happen and Rex asks what Xander‘s plan is.
Xander tells Rex that he needs to give up any claim to the baby and divorce Sarah. Neither of them knows that the man pretending to be from the gas company is actually the hitman EJ sent after Xander. Rex tells Xander that’s not going to happen and tells him to stay away from Sarah and her baby. Xander turns to open the door asking if Rex is going to kill him if he doesn’t. The hitman comes up behind Rex and bashes him over the head before pointing the gun at Xander and telling him that killing Xander is his job.
Xander figures out that it’s EJ who paid the man the kill him and offers to pay him to leave. Just as the man’s about to shoot him EJ bursts in and tells him the job is done. The man says that Xander has already seen him, but Xander promises not to say anything. EJ promises the hitman he’ll still get paid and the man gets his toolbox and leaves the apartment. Xander asks EJ why he called him off and EJ tells him that Susan is still alive.
Xander tells EJ that he’s going to call the police and report him for trying to have him killed and EJ tells him that if he does that Susan will press charges against him for kidnapping. Xander agrees not to say anything and EJ agrees to get Susan to not press charges against him. After EJ leaves, Xander lightly kicks Rex and tells him that it’s time to wake up. Rex gets up and accuses Xander of luring him over there so his hired gun could knock him out. Xander tells Rex that that’s not what happened. He told him that he just got emotional and fainted. Rex doesn’t believe him and tells him to stay away from Sarah and the baby before leaving angrily. After he is gone Xander calls his lawyer and tells them that Susan is alive and he wants to sue for full custody of his daughter.

EJ gets back to the house and looks for Susan. She comes in and he asks where she went and she tells him that she went to visit with Marlena. She asks where he was and he tells her he had important business to take care of. She asks him if he was a good boy when she was missing and he tells her that he wishes he could tell her he was before she laughs and hugs him.

Chloe tells Philip that she’s leaving Salem and he asks if she's leaving with Xander to go get married. She tells him that since Xander found out that he’s the father of Sarah’s baby their relationship is over. She says that she can’t live with him anymore and can’t work at The Spectator so there’s nothing keeping hr in Salem. She tells him that she’s going to New York to be with her parents and Parker.
Philip thanks her for telling him. She asks if he thought she would leave without saying anything to him. He says it in the past she might have. She tells him that she only would’ve done it if she thought that he would become obsessive again, but she knows that he’s changed. She tells him how happy she is that he’s alive and how great it’s been reconnecting with him, she also tells him how proud she is of him for all the work he did on himself to become better.
He updates her about what’s been going on with her family and compares them to the soap opera, Body&Soul. They talk about his relationship with Victor and he tells her that he’s just upset that he never got the chance to say goodbye but he’s thankful that he gets to say goodbye to her. They hug goodbye. Philip turns to leave and Chloe stops in and asks if he wants to come with her. She tells him that they have work to do to get back to where they were as a couple, but that she wants the chance.
She tells him that she can’t make any promises and he promises her that he will respect her boundaries and that there’s no pressure and no expectations. Philip agrees to go with her to New York and they hug again. They each leave to say goodbye to the people they have to say it to, and Chloe wishes Philip luck with his. After Philip leaves Chloe calls Nicole and says that she has something to tell her and asks if they could meet for lunch so they can talk.

Sarah is trying to rest while Victoria naps when Kate comes in and startles. Sarah asks what’s wrong and Kate tells her that she’s put a target on Rex's back. Sarah asks what she’s talking about and Kate accuses her of using Rex as a human shield against Xander. Kate asks Sarah if she wants Rex dead. Sara tells her that of course, she doesn’t want Rex dead and Kate points out that the reason Sarah doesn’t want Xander to know that he was Victoria’s father is because she’s scared of him and thinks he’s a danger.
Kate asked her why it's okay for Sarah to put Kate's child in danger. Sara tells Kate that she has to ask Rex because this entire plan was his idea. She reminds Kate that Rex is a grown man who makes his own decisions. Sara tells Kate about how the lie came about in Chicago and Kate tells her that she should’ve still been honest. Kate accuses her of using Rex's feelings for her and Sarah tells her that she has always been honest with Rex about her feelings for him being completely platonic.
Kate tells Sarah about her and Roman's conversation with Rex and Sarah tells Kate that Rex already told her about it. Kate tells her that Rex is hoping that Sarah will fall back in love with him, but that they both know that she won’t. Sarah tells her that she has to put her daughter first, and Kate replies that she has to put her son first, and she’s not gonna let him take a bullet for her. Kate tells Sarah that if she hurts Rex, she’ll answer to her. Shortly after she leaves, Rex comes home and Sarah tells him that she has something to say. He asks what it is and she tearfully tells him that she wants a divorce.
Philip goes to the pub, and Kate tells him that she’s happy that she’s finally going to have the chance to spend quality time with him. Philip tells her that he loves spending time with her too, but they’re not going to have quite as much time with each other as she thought.
